Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy can noticeably improve the appearance of some vascular lesions like "spider veins" and some varicose veins. Afflicting mainly women, "spider veins"
(telangiectasias) are tiny red or purple vessels, close to the skin's surface, that commonly appear on the legs. Varicose veins are larger (usually more than
one-fourth inch in diameter), distended, a darker color, and are more likely to cause pain. For the treatment of both types, a painless sclerosing solution is
injected into the problem veins. The sclerosing (meaning "causing thickening") solution acts as an irritant that causes a localized thickening of blood factors,
which eventually results in the vessels being filled in with nonvascular tissue. In effect, the treated vessels are absorbed by the body; this is manifested by
the veins first turning a lighter color, and finally by disappearing. Notably, with the absorption of the target vessels, the pain (aching and cramping) associated
with them is also often remedied. In most cases, about fifty to seventy per cent of the treated vessels will respond favorably.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Michelson will check for any possible complications with your venous system. A hand-held Doppler ultrasound device may be
used to test for any circulatory backflow. If indicated, you may be referred to a different specialist, as any underlying problems would have to be addressed before
sclerotherapy of the surface veins would be successful.
A sclerotherapy session usually takes only fifteen to forty-five minutes to complete. After an antiseptic solution is applied, a small syringe with a micro-needle
is used to inject the sclerosing solution. During injecting, the skin above the veins is held taut, while bright indirect lighting and proper magnifying glasses ensure precision.
Cotton and compression tape is applied to each area immediately after completion, and must remain in place for forty-eight hours. The procedure requires no anesthesia; you
may experience a mild burning sensation when the solution is injected, but it subsides in a few seconds.
After the procedure, support hosiery will usually be prescribed to control blood clots and reduce bruising. A walking regimen will also help blood clots from forming in the
deep veins of the legs. Several treatments at three to four week intervals may be required, and final results are usually apparent in several months.
Most patients are very pleased with how their skin appears younger, clearer, and more healthy-looking. Call today to arrange for your consultation! We look forward to hearing from you!
